What’s the Difference Between Melamine and MDF/Supawood?

Both are popular choices for kitchen cupboards, wardrobes, and shop fittings, but they suit different projects:

  • Melamine board is chipboard (or MDF, on request) with a pre-finished decorative surface — no painting or varnishing needed. It’s the standard choice for kitchen cupboards, bedroom wardrobes, and office furniture.
  • Supawood/MDF is a smooth, uncoated fibreboard — a pocket-friendly alternative to solid wood. Its fine surface is ideal for spray paint or PVC wrap finishes, and it can also be stained, varnished, or finished with melamine-impregnated décor.

Supawood is manufactured from either Eucalyptus or Pine wood residuals. Eucalyptus is darker in colour with greater water resistance, while Pine Supawood (also known as bernique MDF) has a yellow tone and properties well suited to laser cutting. The PG Bison MelaWood Range

  • Standard melamine finishes — the everyday choice for cabinetry carcases and shop fittings

Melamine can also be supplied with an MDF substrate instead of the standard chipboard base, and in E1 standard on request.

Single- and Double-Faced Supawood for Shaker-Style Doors

TimBuild Woodstock also stocks single- and double-faced Supawood, with either one or both sides finished in melamine. It’s a popular choice for shaker-style kitchen cupboard doors and panels, and can be hand-painted for a custom finish. On the smaller end of the range, 3mm and 6mm MDF is often used as a substrate for laser cutting — handy for craft projects, DIY jobs, and even model-making.

  • Send it in — TimBuild Woodstock will email back a quote and an estimated delivery date.
  • Boards are cut on a precision panel saw to exact dimensions, with clean, chip-free edges.
  • Edging, drilling, and computer-generated cutting lists are all available, so your cabinet panels arrive ready to assemble.

Delivery is available across Cape Town and surrounding areas — worth considering, since sheet materials are heavy and awkward to move safely in a standard car.
